Serving The Community and Those in Need

Members of Immanuel participate in many outreach efforts to benefit the local community, as well as people in third world countries.

Garden of Grace: Immanuel’s community garden was first planted in 2011 to produce fresh food for the Cornerstone Food Pantry at St. David’s in Aylett. Squash, tomatoes, beans, kale and  peppers have been grown to help supplement donations of canned and dry goods that the ministry relies upon to feed about 300 local families. Everyone is invited to help.

The Cherub School has been an important, non-profit ministry of  Immanuel since 1988, when it filled the need for a pre-school in our area.  A school director and a board of directors composed of parishioners and school parents manage the school, which now serves over 80 children.

In the fall, Immanuel sponsors "Music in the Old Church," an increasingly popular choral concert series that's outgrown the church and is now staged at various locations throughout Richmond.

Throughout the year, through the efforts of the Food, Clothing and Shelter Committee, we donate food, school supplies and Christmas gifts to the Cornerstone Development Center, located at St. David's Episcopal Church in Aylett. Other outreach efforts include cooking and delivering meals for the Men's Shelter and CARITAS, a homeless shelter program, and assisting Hanover Habitat for Humanity with construction projects and fundraisers, such as collecting aluminum cans for recycling. Cans can be dropped off at the parish house throughout the year. Parishioners also send school supplies to the Rosebud Sioux Reservation in South Dakota, and contribute to Episcopal Relief and Development, United Thank Offering and a local domestic violence safe house. Internationally, our members have been involved with mission trips to Haiti and Honduras.

The Immanuel Old Church Foundation, our modest endowment fund, awards grants for special requests, projects and charities. Each year, scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors from Lee-Davis, Atlee and Hanover high schools. The fund is managed by church trustees.

Immanuel is also the chartering organization that sponsors Boy Scouts of America Troop 531. The troop meets regularly in the parish house. Immanuel has benefited from several Eagle Scout projects, and the scouts help us during clean-up day.
