IMMANUEL CHURCH SEARCH FAQs
Here are some answers to Frequently Asked Questions.

How long will it take to find a Rector?
The search process typically takes about 18 months after the departure of a previous rector. The Rev. Webster Gibson left in June 2007 to become rector of Christ Church , Winchester , after a faithful ministry at Immanuel of nearly eight years. According to research, it is generally in a congregation's best interest to have an extended period to adjust to the departure of the previous rector and to evaluate the parish's current and future desires before calling a new Rector.
Why can't committee members discuss candidates?
The Diocese prohibits Search Committee members from discussing outside the committee any aspect of the search and evaluation of Rector candidates. We can't even discuss these matters with spouses and partners. Put yourself in the candidate's shoes: Job seekers typically do not want current employers to know they are looking for, have applied for or have been recommended for another position. Those who are not selected often happily continue in their present ministries until called elsewhere. While we can't answer questions about specific candidates, you will be kept informed about progress being made toward finding our new Rector. We also welcome recommendations from you about possible candidates.
Who is leading Immanuel now?
The Rev. David Knight came to Immanuel in September as our Interim Rector after a distinguished career as an Episcopal priest in Virginia , Texas and Massachusetts . An interim rector's role is one of spiritual guide and priest between a former rector and a new one. An interim has the same duties and authority as a full-time rector. He or she typically has experienced transitions in ministry in both personal and parish life, which helps a congregation better prepare for its next Rector.
The Vestry continues its role as manager of ministry of the laity, church programs, finances and property.
What process is used to select a new Rector?
Parishes in the Diocese of Virginia use a detailed process, which is described on the Diocese of Virginia Web site. Click here to read about the search process.
Because of Immanuel's long history of stability, we are using the standard search process combined with parish survey. In 2008, the Vestry will consider calling another committee to begin the exciting “ReVision” process, which also is described on the diocesan Web site. ReVision helps a parish to fully explore itself in order to formulate a plan for the future. If this process is undertaken, ReVision may begin before the new Rector is called and continue after he or she is called.
Who is on the Search Committee?
Seven members were chosen by the Vestry: Tilghman Broaddus , Charlie Causey, Belinda Cowling , Mark Ivanhoe Shelley Loving-Ryder , Betty Booker Morriss and Brenda Smith. Together we represent more than 150 years of experience as communicants at Immanuel. We are former Vestry members, former senior and junior wardens, Old Church Foundation (endowment fund) trustees, Sunday school teachers, Altar Guild heads, ushers, lay readers, licensed Eucharistic ministers and more. We include professionals, volunteers, retirees, empty-nesters and parents with grown children or with bustling households of teens and college students.
Does the Diocese choose our Rector?
No. The Diocese helps churches through its Transition Ministry office and resources. The Bishop's office also screens finalists. Candidates may be recommended, but churches are not required to call these candidates.
